A White Porcupine-Rare sight
Arrived: Sept. 25, 2009    Released: Oct. 11, 2009

On Sept. 25 2009 we received one of our most unusual patients.  It was a porcupine which isn't unusual in itself, but this little guy was WHITE.  Not an albino just white.  Our rehabber had never since this coloring before and just like the rest of us was pretty excited.

This little porky was found on the road by some concerned citizens near Ringle, WI.  They gave it to a farmer who said he would find someone who could take care of it and the next day was able to tracked us down.  It was guessed that Ringle was about 1 1/2 hours away from the Center and so the problem became how do we get this porcupine to the Center.  Luckily we have some amazing volunteers with a majority being volunteers drivers who go pick up animals in need for us.  In this case we needed to tap into our specially trained Raptor Rescue drivers as this porcupine would need to be corralled into a crate once the driver arrived at the site.

It was one of those days that nobody was home, but Mazie Miles was our knight in shining armor.  She agreed to get the porcupine and was excited to see if it really was white.  At the time we weren't exactly sure how far Ringle was from her town of Tomahawk and it turns out farther than we thought.  It took Mazie over an hour from where she lives to just reach the farm.  Upon arriving at the Center, though, she pronounced it one of the most beautiful animals she had ever seen and well worth the trip.

No one will truly know what happened to this porcupine, but it was assumed he was hit by a car and suffering from internal injuries.  We were concerned for him in the beginning, but after a few days with the right care provided by our staff he perked up.  Soon he was acting just like a porcupine should and Mark knew we would be able to release him.  Release came on Sunday, Oct. 11th which was a beautiful fall day.

Take a look at the pictures before to see him.  Most are of him on release day.  (Please note that him is used loosely as we did not find out if the porcupine was a boy or girl.)
