OwlHaven-Residents' Cages

(Click on any image below to view full size)

Through a special donation in remembrance of an animal lover, who past away before her time, our Saw-whet and Long Eared owls are getting a new home and even a new location.  The first picture shows the old cage, which did need to be updated.  The new cage will be across the trail from their existing enclosure.  A new part of the trail will also be built to accommodate the new cage.  This cage is flying up and we hope to have it finished by the end of December, but spring will be fine with us too.

This view shows the cage through Phoenix's viewing window.  The longer pictures show the inside of the cage.  The first shows two cages: 1 for the Saw-whet owl and 1 for a future resident.  The next picture shows where Leo, our Long Eared will live.

Definitely looking like a building now.  Third picture shows the construction guys putting up the first part of the roof.

The finish is so close we can just about taste it.  The roof has been finished, doors installed, and inside walls put up.  The fourth picture shows the inside view of Leo's new cage (the biggest).  The new path leading from the back of the enclosure was just completed.  (In a couple of the pictures the person you see is our Director of Adm., Beth Burns.)

New section of trail is completed

The siding was able to be put up in between the cold spells we have been receiving.  The siding is actually made of cement and is basically no maintenance,  which is good for us.  It will be painted the first thing in spring along with the fencing placed in the windows.  Than it will be all set for the new tenants.

Finished siding    Cement siding was used   The siding will be painted in the spring

It is painted and looking great!  Currently we are just waiting for our fencing material to show up so we can screen in the windows and outside doors.  (A lost shipping order has put us back a little.)

Painted building   Some windows installed   Swinging doors installed on both entrances

We have received the fencing material and our first resident has moved into his new quarters.  Cosmo!  Currently he is being work with by one of our summer interns and we hope to be able to use him in programs by the fall.  Leo's side of the enclosures is being designed by another intern and should be completed by the end of summer.

On August 8, 2007 this special owl enclosure was dedicated to Melissa Ann Anast and christened Owl Haven.  Family members were are site to place the plaque on the new cage and have a look around.  Dr. George and Mrs. Velta Anast also brought flowers to make a place dedicated to their daughter that much more beautiful.
